Commercial Door Vision Kit & Louver Kit Selection Guide by MDI Supply
Commercial Door Vision Kit & Louver Kit
Selection Guide
How to choose the right vision kit, glass and door louver for a commercial opening.
Authorized Distributor — More Products Available Than Shown Online
MDI Supply is an Authorized Distributor of Rockwood, National Guard Products (NGP), Anemostat and Air Louvers. Our website shows many of our most commonly requested vision kits, louver kits and related products, but it does not show every product, size, configuration, finish or option available from these manufacturers.
If you do not see the exact product your project requires, contact MDI Supply for a special-order quotation. We can provide available products from these brands and help identify the appropriate vision kit, louver, glazing configuration or specialty option for your project.
Choose in Six Questions
1. Visibility or ventilation?
Visibility → Vision Kit
Ventilation → Door Louver
2. Is the door fire rated?
If the door is fire rated, choose a vision opening OR a louver. Do not use both a vision kit and a louver in the same fire-rated door.
- Vision: use the appropriate compatible vision kit and fire-rated ceramic glass for the rated application.
- Louver: use an appropriate fusible-link fire-rated louver kit.
Always verify the required rating, permitted opening size and listing/installation limitations of the specific components.
3. Is the glass included?
Do not assume it is. Most standard stock vision kits sold by MDIsupply are supplied as the metal vision-kit frame with glass by others. Selected products are complete packages that include the vision kit and glass.
4. What glass thickness are you using?
Standard stock vision kits are generally provisioned for 1/4" glass. Special-order vision kits are available for other glass thicknesses and insulated glass.
5. What size opening do you need?
Do not confuse vision-kit/order size, door cutout, glass size and visible-lite size. Check the dimensions for the specific model before cutting the door or ordering glass.
ORDER / KIT SIZE → DOOR CUTOUT → GLASS SIZE → VISIBLE LITE
6. Standard or specialty application?
| Application | Start With |
|---|---|
| Standard non-rated interior door | Standard vision kit or louver |
| Fire-rated door requiring visibility | Compatible vision kit + fire-rated ceramic glass |
| Fire-rated door requiring ventilation | Fusible-link fire-rated louver |
| Insulated/non-standard glass | Special-order vision kit |
Vision Kit & Louver Examples
Vision Kits
Standard Vision Kits — Glass by Others
Most standard stock vision kits are frame-only and generally provisioned for 1/4" glass. Confirm the individual model. Current MDIsupply options include Rockwood LT-B1 and Air Louvers metal vision kits.
Complete Vision Kit + Glass Packages
Selected MDIsupply products package the vision kit with glazing. Current offerings include non-rated packages with clear tempered glass and separate rated packages with fire/safety-rated ceramic glass.

Fire-Rated Vision Openings
For a fire-rated door requiring a vision opening, use the appropriate fire-rated ceramic glass and compatible vision kit. Do not substitute ordinary tempered glass where rated ceramic glazing is required. A fire label on the door does not mean every vision-opening size or configuration is permitted.
Round Vision Kits
Round/porthole-style kits are available for circular lites.
Special-Order Vision Kits
Because MDI Supply is an Authorized Distributor of Rockwood, National Guard Products (NGP), Anemostat and Air Louvers, we can quote many products and configurations that are not displayed on MDIsupply.com. Special-order options include other glass thicknesses, insulated glass, special sizes, finishes and specialty configurations. Have the door thickness, opening size, glass thickness/type and rating requirement ready when requesting a quote.
Door Louvers
Standard Non-Fire-Rated Louvers
For non-rated doors requiring ventilation, use a standard commercial louver appropriate for the environment. Current options include NGP L-700-RX, Rockwood LV-IY and Air Louvers fixed-blade families.
Fire-Rated Door Louvers
Do not install a standard non-rated louver in a fire-rated door. Do not combine a vision kit and louver in the same fire-rated door.
Current MDIsupply offerings include NGP L-1900, Anemostat FLDL, Rockwood LV-FL and Air Louvers 1900A. Verify rating, size and installation limitations.
Exterior / Storm Applications
Exterior openings may require more than basic air transfer. MDIsupply offers the Air Louvers 900FPL with screen and 1400 Series storm-proof aluminum louver.

What Not to Do
- Do not assume glass is included.
- Do not order before determining glass thickness.
- Do not assume order size, cutout, glass size and visible lite are identical.
- Do not substitute ordinary tempered glass where fire-rated ceramic glazing is required.
- Do not use a standard non-rated louver in a fire-rated door.
- Do not use a vision kit and louver together in the same fire-rated door.
- Do not assume every opening size is permitted because the door carries a fire label.
- Do not assume a stock vision kit accommodates insulated or non-standard glass.
