Hinge & Strike Location Chart

Every hollow metal manufacturer locates hinges and strikes a little differently, and the differences are often only a fraction of an inch. That is enough to stop a new door from hanging in an existing frame. If you are replacing a door or a frame — but not both — the new piece has to be prepped to match the old one. This chart shows the standard locations used by nine manufacturers so you can confirm what you have before you order.

How to use this chart

1. Identify the manufacturer. Look for a label on the hinge edge of the door or on the hinge jamb of the frame, or check the original submittals.
2. Measure what you are keeping. Keeping the frame? Measure the frame. Keeping the door? Measure the door. Take all measurements from the top down, as described above each table.
3. Compare against the chart. If your measurements match a manufacturer's row, tell us that manufacturer when you order. If they do not match any row, send us your measurements and we will fabricate to them.

Frame measurements

Measured from the inside of the frame head (the underside of the header, where the door stops) down to the top of each hinge cutout, and to the strike.

Door measurements

Measured from the top of the door down to the top of each hinge cutout, and to the lock. Door locations run 1/8″ less than the matching frame locations, which accounts for the clearance at the head.

Before you order

• Chart assumptions. All figures are for 1-3/4″ doors with 4-1/2″ hinges. Other hinge heights, door thicknesses, or special heights shift the locations.
• Republic changed its standard on July 15, 2015. Republic openings built before that date use the older locations. If you are not sure of the date, measure.
• 8′-0″ doors use four hinges. Every manufacturer on the chart adds a fourth hinge at that height.
• Handing matters too. Hinge and strike prep are on opposite edges, so the door must be ordered in the correct hand. See our door swings and handing guide.
• Existing hardware. If you are reusing hinges or a lock, include the make and model so we can match the cutout as well as the location.
