Ordering
Do I need a contractor account or license to order?
No. Anyone can order from MDI Supply — contractors, property managers, locksmiths, and door companies, installers and end-users. Although most of our customers are trade customers and typically not homeowners. You can check out online without an account, though creating one makes it easier to track orders and place reorders.
Can I get a quote for a large or multi-opening project?
Yes. For multi-opening projects, special sizes, or bulk quantities, send us your door schedule, hardware list, or plans through our contact page and we'll prepare a quote.
How do I know I'm ordering the right size and handing?
Measure the existing door or frame opening and confirm the handing before ordering. Our Resource Center includes guides that walk through handing, bevel, and common door and frame dimensions. When in doubt, send us photos and measurements and we'll verify before you buy.
Can I change or cancel an order after placing it?
Contact us as soon as possible. We can usually change or cancel an order that hasn't shipped yet. Custom-made and made-to-order items may not be cancelable once production has started. Some items are noted on the item page that they cannot be canceled, returned or exchanged.
Products and specifications
Are your doors and frames fire rated?
Many of our hollow metal doors and frames are available with fire labels. Fire rating requirements depend on the wall assembly and the local code, and rated openings must use rated hardware and be installed per the label. Check the individual product page for rating details, or contact us with your opening requirements.
What hardware finishes do you offer?
Finish availability varies by product. See our Hardware Finish guide for finish codes and what they look like, and check the product page for the finishes stocked for that item. We offer products and finishes beyond what is available in our website. Use our contact page or give us a call if you have a question.
What does ANSI/BHMA Grade 1, 2, or 3 mean?
ANSI/BHMA grades rate hardware durability and performance. Grade 1 is the highest and is intended for heavy commercial traffic, Grade 2 for medium-duty commercial, and Grade 3 for light commercial or residential use. For schools, healthcare, and other high-traffic buildings, Grade 1 is usually specified.
Do you carry replacement parts for existing hardware?
We typically do not stock parts. Depending on the part needed and the manufacturer, we may be able to obtain what you need. Send us the manufacturer and model number stamped on the device, or a photo of it, and we'll identify the correct part or a compatible replacement.
Can I get submittal or spec sheets for products?
Yes. Product pages include specification details where available, and we can supply submittal packages, cut sheets, and installation instructions on request.
Do you sell complete door and frame units, or doors and frames separately?
Both. You can buy a hollow metal door on its own, a frame on its own, or a complete door and frame unit. Complete units are the simplest option for a new opening because the door, frame, and prep are matched for you. See our Complete Door/Frame Units section, or contact us if you are replacing only one part of an existing opening.
What gauge steel are your hollow metal doors and frames?
Gauge varies by series and application — lighter gauges for interior openings, heavier gauges for high-traffic and exterior use. The gauge for each product is listed in the specifications on its product page. If you are matching an existing opening or working to a written spec, send us the spec and we will confirm the correct series.
What is the difference between a knock-down frame and a welded frame?
A knock-down (KD) frame ships flat in three pieces and is assembled at the opening, which makes it easier to ship, store, and install — including around an existing wall. A welded frame arrives as one fully welded, squared assembly and is stronger and more rigid, which is why it is usually specified for exterior, high-abuse, and heavier-duty openings. Installation instructions for both are in our Resource Center.
Can I order a door with custom cutouts, such as a vision light, louver, or lock prep?
Yes. Doors and frames can be made with vision light cutouts, louvers, and hardware preparations. Custom cutouts and preps are made to order, so confirm locations and hardware before ordering — send us your hardware or a cut sheet and we will verify the prep matches.
Do doors come pre-machined for hardware, and what prep do I need to specify?
Most doors and frames are supplied with standard preparations, and additional prep can be added for the hardware you are using. To get it right, tell us the lock or exit device make and model, hinge type and quantity, closer, and whether the opening is fire rated. Hardware location drawings are available in our Resource Center.
Are your doors primed or finish painted?
MDI hollow metal doors and frames come standard with A40 galv steel, which do not need to be prime painted. You can apply finish paint directly to the A40 steel We can apply a prime coat (BHMA 600 / USP) to the doors/frame when required for an additional fee. Prime paint is intended to be field painted after installation. Prime coat is not a finish coat and does not provide long-term corrosion protection, so plan on painting. Check the product page for the finish supplied with a specific item.
Do you offer installation services or field measuring?
No. MDI is a distributor and fabricator and does not offer installation or field measuring services. If you need an installer, we suggest searching for a local licensed contractor or qualified installer. We are glad to help confirm sizes, handing, and hardware prep before you order — send us your measurements and photos through our contact page.
Shipping and delivery
How are doors and frames shipped?
Hardware and smaller items ship by parcel carrier. Doors, frames, and other oversized items ship by LTL freight and are typically crated, which usually means curbside delivery on a truck — plan to have someone available to receive and unload the shipment.
How long will my order take?
Lead times depend on whether the item is stocked or made to order. In-stock hardware typically ships quickly, while custom doors and frames are built to your specifications and take longer. Contact us for the current lead time on a specific item. Most item pages state current lead-times. And we often ship sooner than the posted lead-time.
What should I do if my shipment arrives damaged?
Inspect the shipment before signing for it. Note any visible damage on the delivery receipt, take photos, and contact us right away so we can file a freight claim and arrange a replacement. Signing a clean delivery receipt makes damage claims much more challenging to resolve.
Returns, payment, and support
What is your return policy?
Return terms, including which items are non-returnable, are listed on our MDI Supply Policies page. Custom and made-to-order products generally cannot be returned, so please confirm sizes, handing, and finishes before ordering.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept major credit cards and the payment options shown at checkout. For purchase orders or other payment arrangements, contact us before placing your order.
Are products covered by a warranty?

MDI will always take point on a warranty claim. If you bought the item from us, we will help facilitate any warranty claim.
