Commercial Door Closer Guide
A commercial door closer has to close and latch the door, survive the traffic, and meet code. The wrong spring size, arm, or hold-open option can fail ADA force limits, void a fire listing, or beat up the frame. Use this Commercial Door Closer Guide to spec the closer, then shop in-stock lines:
- Accentra (formerly Yale) Door Closers
- Accentra YDC 200 Economy Closers
- Norton Door Closers
- Hager Door Closers
- Design Hardware Door Closers
- PDQ Hardware
Tri-pack standard: All door closers sold by MDIsupply.com come tri-packed. That means the box includes mounting for regular arm (pull side), parallel arm (push side), and top jamb. Choose the mount that fits the opening; you do not have to guess the arm pack before the closer ships.

1. Start with the opening
|
Question
|
Why it matters
|
|---|---|
|
Interior or exterior?
|
Exterior and wind-loaded doors usually need more spring power and a tougher body.
|
|
Fire-rated door?
|
Mechanical hold-open arms are not permitted on fire door assemblies. Use non-hold-open.
|
|
ADA / barrier-free?
|
Interior doors often need about 5 lbf opening force. Adjustable 1–6 closers can be set to meet this. Confirm local code for exterior doors.
|
|
Traffic?
|
Office corridor vs. school, hospital, or storefront changes body and arm choice.
|
|
Door width, weight, thickness?
|
Wider and heavier doors need more power. Most commercial doors are 1-3/4" thick.
|
|
Inswing or outswing?
|
Sets regular vs. parallel-arm mounting. Both are in the tri-pack.
|
|
Must the door stay open?
|
If a fire door has no listed closer, listed UL spring hinges are the other common code path.
2. Spring size (power)
Most MDI commercial closers are adjustable size 1–6, often factory set around size 3. Economy YDC200 units are typically size 1–4.
Starting points (confirm with the product chart and field-adjust):
- Size 2–3: Lighter interior doors
- Size 3–4: Standard 36" commercial interior
- Size 4–5: Exterior, vestibule, or heavier doors
- Size 5–6: Wide, heavy, or wind-loaded doors
ADA note: measure opening force at the latch after install. If force is high, reduce spring power before you speed up latch. Slamming the door is not a substitute for correct size.
3. Mount and arm (already in the box)
Because every MDI closer is tri-packed:
- Regular arm — pull-side mount. Most efficient. Best power.
- Parallel arm — push-side mount. Common on outswing exterior doors. Needs more spring power than regular arm for the same door.
- Top jamb — closer on the frame header, arm on the door. Use when door-face mounting is blocked.
Also available on specific models:
- Stop / heavy-duty parallel arms — limit swing and protect the opening. Example: Accentra 2721 with removable stop.
- Hold-open arms — non-fire doors only. Examples: Accentra 2711, Norton 7500H, Hager 5300 Hold-Open.
Fire-rated doors that must be held open need a listed electromagnetic holder tied to alarm — not a mechanical hold-open closer.
4. Map the job to in-stock brands
Economy / light commercial
Storefronts, offices, lower-cycle interiors.
- Accentra YDC201 — adjustable 1–4, Grade 1 economy
- Design Hardware 116 — adjustable 1–6 value closer
Standard architectural (most jobs)
Typical commercial interiors, many exteriors, ADA openings.
- Accentra 2701 / 2700 Series — adjustable 1–6, aluminum body
- Norton 8501 — popular multi-size architectural closer
- Hager 5300 — adjustable 1–6, ADA, full cover
- PDQ 5101 / 5500 — Grade 1, tri-pack, common retrofit hole patterns
Heavy / institutional
Schools, hospitals, high-cycle or abuse-prone doors.
- Norton 7500 — heavy-duty institutional
- Norton 9500 — extra-heavy cast iron
- Accentra / Yale 5801 — cast iron Grade 1
- Hager 5100 — cast iron heavy duty
- Design Hardware 416 — cast iron; commonly used as an LCN 4040-style replacement
- Design Hardware 316R — replacement closer with mounting plate for retrofit
Hold-open (non-fire doors only)
- Accentra 2711
- Norton 7500H
- Hager 5300 Hold-Open
- Or a separate overhead holder & stop
5. What to look for on the spec sheet
- ANSI/BHMA A156.4 Grade 1
- UL / cUL and UL10C for fire doors
- ADA / ANSI A117.1 when accessibility applies
- Separate sweep, latch, and backcheck valves
- Finish: 689 aluminum, 690/695 dark bronze, 693/BSP black are the common stock finishes
Optional delayed action is useful for carts and accessibility. It is not on every SKU; ask if the spec requires it.

Replacing an old closer without new holes
Check footprint. Design Hardware 316R includes a retrofit mounting plate. PDQ 5500 notes common patterns used on Norton 8500 / Yale 3500-style installs. Send a photo of the old body if unsure.
7. After installation
- Set spring power for door size, weight, and mount.
- Set backcheck so the door does not crash near full open.
- Set sweep for controlled closing.
- Set latch so the lock/latchbolt catches without slamming.
- Check opening force if ADA applies.
- On fire doors, confirm the door self-closes and latches every time.
8. What not to do
- Do not install a hold-open closer on a fire door.
- Do not undersize an exterior or parallel-arm job and “fix it” with fast latch speed.
- Do not leave backcheck off on doors that can blow open.
- Do not assume one size works for every 36" door. Weatherstrip, hinges, and stack pressure change force.
